Car hack uses digital-radio broadcasts to seize control - GEEK

GEEK - BBC - Several car infotainment systems are vulnerable to a hack attack that could potentially put lives at risk, a leading security company has said
NCC Group said the exploit could be used to seize control of a vehicle's brakes and other critical systems
The Manchester-based company told the BBC it had found a way to carry out the attacks by sending data via digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio signals.
It coincides with news of a similar flaw discovered by two US researchers
Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller showed Wired magazine that they could take control of a Jeep Cherokee car by sending data to its internet-connected entertainment and navigation system via a mobile-phone network
Chrysler has released a patch to address the problem
However, NCC's work - which has been restricted to its labs - points to a wider problem.

The UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has responded by saying that car companies "invest billions of pounds to keep vehicles secure as possible".
Breached brakes
NCC demonstrated its technique to BBC Radio 4's PM programme at its offices in Cheltenham.
By using relatively cheap off-the-shelf components connected to a laptop, the company's research director, Andy Davis, created a DAB station
Because infotainment systems processed DAB data to display text and pictures on car dashboard screens, he said, an attacker could send code that would let them take over the system
Once an infotainment system had been compromised, he said, an attacker could use it as a way to control more critical systems, including steering and braking
Depending on the power of the transmitter, he said, a DAB broadcast could allow attackers to affect many cars at once
"As this is a broadcast medium, if you had a vulnerability within a certain infotainment system in a certain manufacturer's vehicle, by sending one stream of data, you could attack many cars simultaneously," he said.
"[An attacker] would probably choose a common radio station to broadcast over the top of to make sure they reached the maximum number of target vehicles"
Mr Davis declined to publicly identify which specific infotainment systems he had hacked, at this point
Lab simulation
In many ways, modern cars are computer networks on wheels
Mike Parris, of SBD, another company that specialises in vehicle security, said modern cars typically contained 50 interlinked computers running more than 50 million lines of code
By contrast, he said, a modern airliner "has around 14 million lines of code"

Such technology allows the latest cars to carry out automatic manoeuvres. For example, a driver can make their vehicle parallel park at the touch of a button
Mr Davis said he had simulated his DAB-based attack only on equipment in his company's buildings because it would be illegal and unsafe to do so in the outside world
But he added that he had previously compromised a real vehicle's automatic-braking system - designed to prevent it crashing into the car in front - by modifying an infotainment system, and he believed this could be replicated via a DAB broadcast
"If someone were able to compromise the infotainment system, because of the architecture of its vehicle network, they would in some cases be able to disable the automatic braking functionality," he said
Jeep attack
On Tuesday, Wired magazine reported that two US security researchers had managed to remotely take control of a Jeep Cherokee's air-conditioning system, radio and windscreen wipers while its journalist was driving the vehicle

Mr Valasek - director of vehicle security research at IOActive - said that NCC's attack appeared to have similarities with his own
"I mean that's essentially what we did over the cell [mobile] network - we took over the infotainment system and from there reprogrammed certain pieces of the vehicle so we could send control commands," he said
"So, it sounds entirely plausible"
But he added that such exploits were beyond the reach of most criminals
"It takes a lot of time skill and money," he said
"That isn't to say that there aren't large organisations interested in it"
More details about both the NCC and the US team's research will be presented to the Black Hat security convention in Las Vegas next month

GoPro has launched a new site to help video-makers

GEEK - BBC - GoPro has launched a new site to help video-makers license their footage.
The firm suggests advertisers and news providers will be among those keen to pay for the rights to use clips and stills captured by its action cameras.
The US company said that videos would start at $1,000 (£640) for six months' use, and that it planned to take a cut - but did not disclose how much.
One expert said it was further evidence of the "blurring of lines between amateur and professional content".
"Some of the clips that are being produced on GoPro devices are almost professional broadcast quality," added Ian Maude from the research firm Enders Analysis.
"This new licensing portal creates a platform for creative GoPro users to market their videos and may also encourage a new generation to pick up the firm's camcorders and get filming."
The service provides an alternative to video streaming sites including YouTube, where people can make money from their clips by adding adverts, and mirrors the photo licensing service provided by platforms including 500px and EyeEm.

For now, GoPro is limiting access to its service to pre-approved users for both the purchase and sale of footage.
New applicants must join a waiting list although a spokeswoman told the BBC the firm intended to relax its restrictions soon.
"We have a lot of athlete-generated content and some other very exciting footage, so the ability for marketers and creative professionals to just be able to search for the content that they want and get it that rather than having to shoot it themselves [should be] a no-brainer," she added.
At launch, 603 videos are on offer, some of which are in the 4K ultra-high-definition format.
Clips can be previewed before purchase, but are watermarked to prevent them being misappropriated.

Anonymous targets IS sympathisers on Twitter

GEEK - BBC - Hacktivist group Anonymous is ramping up efforts to tackle sympathisers of the Islamic State group on Twitter.
It has published a list of Twitter accounts it claims are spreading propaganda in support of the group.
Some accounts have been flooded with images of Japanese anime characters to try to influence search engine results for phrases connected to IS.
Many other accounts have been suspended or shut down as a result of the group's actions.
No solution
As well as targeting Twitter accounts, the operation also sought to take down Facebook pages, blogs, websites and web proxies used by supposed IS supporters.
The publication of the list is the latest in a series of "operations" by Anonymous and others hacktivist organisations against the IS group and its online supporters.
The list of more than 750 Twitter accounts that Anonymous has taken action against was published on the Pastebin website. Top of the list were accounts that had more than 10,000 followers, it said, but many others with smaller numbers of readers were also targeted.

Some accounts that Anonymous members won access to had their messages and images changed to show the ISIS-Chan anime character. Groups tackling IS propaganda online are starting to use images of the young girl in connection with the group's name and slogans in an attempt to dilute the results people get when they search for information about the group.
The Anonymous action comes after UK Prime Minister David Cameron unveiled a strategy to help tackle the "poison" of extremism. The package of measures included demands that ISPs and net firms do more to remove extremist material and identify who posted it.
It is not clear how much effect the action by Anonymous and others is having on the work IS does to spread its message online. One study released earlier this year estimated that the group and its sympathisers control more than 90,000 Twitter accounts.
"There is definitely utility in shutting down accounts," said JM Berger, an analyst that did the study of IS' use of social media.
"It's not going to eliminate IS's presence online, but it helps limit their ability to accomplish their goals, particularly with respect to spreading its propaganda outside of its core audience," he said.
"It also wastes their time and requires ISIS supporters to spend a lot of bandwidth rebuilding the network instead of recruiting and promoting their views," he added.
Rashad Ali, a senior fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue which works on ways to counter extremism said the approach did have merit.
"The action is both positive and negative," he said.
"Practically speaking, you are getting rid of a whole host of people from the public domain," he said, adding that such a large takedown can undoubtedly have an impact.
"However," he said, "it's not a solution because what we now need to do is not just take down accounts but actually provide new narratives for people.
"This is where we are failing," he said. "We have not had a strong, thought-out counter-argument to IS's message."

IPHONE : Jailbreak News

Hello everyone!! I’m going to be explaining when the jailbreak will be coming out and the information, like when it’s coming, what IOS firmware there going to release it on and stuff like that, and also when the jailbreak come’s out I will be doing a video how to jailbreak you IDevice. So let get started.

If you running IOS 8.1.2 or under you can jailbreak you’re device but if you running 8.2, 8.3  or 8.4 beta you cannot, because apple patched the exploits that are needed for the jailbreak. Also apple stopped signing IOS 8.1.2, firmware, so you cant downgrade. But i0n1c has posted a video showing that IOS 8.4 beta is jailbroken.

But it is not released to the public. So they might have a jailbreak for IOS 8.4, but that bad new’s for iphone 4s user because IOS 8.3 is the last update it get’s so that mean iphone 4s cant be jailbreakable unless they make a jailbreak for IOS 8.3. Another thing is apple’s working on a security system called Rootless, and that gonna be in IOS 9, making IOS 9 impossible to jailbreak.

So if you’re jailbroken and A new firmware comes out don’t update until the jailbreak teams say it’s safe to. Another Thing is you got to watch out for fake jailbreak, there people making website for fake jalbreak so they can scam you. Don’t fall for it just wait till one of the jailbreak teams announce A jailbreak. Also Ill keep you guys updated, and tell you when A jailbreak is released. So when will a jailbreak be release? Well I don’t really know and jailbreak team really haven't said anything. But we have many jailbreak teams working on a jailbreak like, PanGu, evasi0n, TaiG, and a couple more. But they are probably just waiting for IOS 8.4 to come out witch is bad news for iPhone 4s user’s, but who know they might make one for IOS 8.3 and 8.4 but there not sure right now. So that’s all I have for now so if you have any questions comment below, Or you can message me. Thanks for reading my blog! Bye!
